This image was taken on the black background and i used various light reflectors to ensure that the back ground was as black as possible. I used the idea of hiding behind your hand in my work to relate to the physical act of hide and seek. The image has been focused on the models eye and the hand in the foreground is blurred although you can see the detail of it. i cropped the image to create a contained composition and turned the image into grayscale so that the viewer focuses on the content rather than colour qualities.
These images were taken on a walk around Falmouth as my group took photos of their surroundings. I decided to take these photos from angles where the subjects identity was partly hidden, for example this image shows two models facing away from the viewer. On photoshop I brightened the background and cropped the image to create a more contained composition.

I decided to take these photos from angles where the Subjects identity was partly hidden, for example this image shows a model facing away from the viewer taking photos of the landscape. On photoshop I brightened the background and cropped the image to create a more contained composition.
This image was taken on the white background and I aimed to capture movement. The model shakes her head and the blurring created by a slow shutter speed made her identity and features far less recognisable. I brightened the image on photoshop to add a sense of vibrant energy and movement and also used a dark vignet to focus the viewers attention onto the subject.

Bill Brandt, Nude, Camden Hill, London, 1958
Brandt’s ‘Nude’ is a relatively descrete image of a young woman in a seated position covered almost entirely by her right knee and arm. The image has also been lit in a manner as to retain the modesty of this woman. The bottom right corner is the darkest section in order to hide the most private parts of a womans body. The lighting has also created a dramatic contrast of shadows and the womans flesh. Brandt has used a monochromatic colour pallete here so that the viewer will focus on the form of the figure rather than representative qualities created by colour. Compositionally this image is a very contained one with the woman as the large central figure who cuts the image into two. The line created by her arm and leg cuts up the composition as well as protecting modesty. Brandts image projects two very different ideas to me: the first is the idea of revealing the natural human form and the second is preserving the modesty and pride of those same people. The image is a quiet and private representation of nudity and preservation all in one. Therefore the subject of ‘Hidden’ has been protrayed in Brandt’s work through the idea of conserving modesty and disguising what is really there.
Andres Serrano, Series: THE KLAN, Klansman (Wizard iii)
Andres Serrano’s ‘Klansman (Wizard iii)’ is a particularly controversial image as he has shown a Klu Klux Klan Wizrd in full uniform. The Klu Klux Klan is an aggressively racist terrorist group in Ameirca which has created large amounts of negative reactions. However the orginal ‘KKK’ was an extremely different establishment. The ‘KKK’ was originally established by the Confederate army in 1865 after their loss in the Civil War and their terrifying costumes were supposed to represent the ghosts of fallen soldiers. The costumes were designed to hide their faces and disguise them from others which clearly has links with the theme of ‘Hidden’. This KKK Wizard has hidden his face beneath his robe and therefore protects himself from being identified as part of such a negative group. Serrano also said upon meeting the KKK members that he was suprised by how human and vulnerable the men were, which is hiden by their terrifying masks. The KKK Wizard is also hidden by Serrano’s use of colour and composition in this work. The man is central to the composition and half hidden in the dark to show his detachment from normal society while the simple colour palette represents a lack of developement with the times. Overall this picutre provokes an eery sense of unease and promotes the idea of the KKK as a cruel and faceful monster.
'Turbulent' by Shirin Neshat
Shirin Neshat’s ‘Turbulent’ is an image of a Native Islamic women with her hands drawn upto her face in grief. This image is a very personal one to Neshat who aimed to communicate her culture’s ideas on loss and suffering. Neshat has used a simple triangular composition to draw attention to the womans face and has also used a basic monochromatic colour pallete to express the depression and pain of the subject’s situation. This image has a dramatic effect on the viewer, engaging us to pity the womans sadness. However there is also a sense that, if we were to help her, we might be intruding in a very private moment. This image applies to the subject of ‘Hidden’ as she contains her face from view in an effort to hide her private display of suffering.
